Drama & Musical Theatre Workshops

The Drama & Musical Theatre Clubs are led by Margot Renssen, who trained at the former Chrysalis Theatre School for Speech & Drama in London, founded upon Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy. She was once a parent of the school, who has been teaching drama, mime, musical theatre and public speaking for 20 years to primary and secondary aged children in a French international school for 3 to 18 year olds; and has now moved back to Scotland.

Margot produced one musical and one drama production each academic year; with her work extending to offering the LAMDA programme, achieving both excellent examination results and gave those students a confidence which they will carry with them throughout life (a number of whom have pursued musical studies in their further education).

Productions included Oliver!, The Wizard of Oz, Annie, Cats, Sound of Music, Chicago, Les Misérables, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Mamma Mia and numerous other titles.

Following consultation from the Lower School Teachers, the after-school club for the younger ones will be one hour only, and be a mix of drama and musical theatre, offered to Classes 1 – 3. The younger children will learn through play, and a little encouragement in using their own imagination, gain confidence and wellbeing, surrounded by a trusted environment.

For older ones in Classes 5-7, pupils are given the option to take Drama and/or Musical Theatre. Together, it will be a 2-hour workshop. Owing to school timetabling, Class 8 pupils can partake in the Musical Theatre workshop. (Drama is incorporated into the curriculum, with their Class 8 play).

A drama workshop is open to Upper School pupils with Fiona Oliver-Larkin on Wednesdays 16.00pm – 17.00pm. This club is free to pupils – supported by the Christmas Market Fund. However, one-on-one LAMDA training is offered to those Upper School pupils who are interested in pursuing this subject on an examination level through Margot Renssen.

‘Canned’ music is avoided in the School where possible, especially for the younger ones. The Musical Theatre workshop will bring in a live pianist on occasion.

The pupils will be working together in small groups for both the drama and musical theatre sections of the workshop. The process of accepting each other’s different ideas and ways of expressing those will lead to a very creative and fun time spent together.
